How often should I be backing up my data?
Doing real-time data backup is CRITICAL! Daily backup solutions are no longer the best method. The solution that The Launch Pad offers backs up in 15 minute increments but what works best for you really depend on the industry that your company is in. Some industries may find they need to be using continuous backup method while others can be backing up every hour.
If there is an emergency, how will I be able to access all of my information and how long will it take for me to be back up and running?
It all depends on the nature of the emergency and which backup solution you are using. It is important to make sure you select a backup method that will store your data in many ways so there are many options on how to access the data in the quickest way possible. In our opinion, it would be best to make sure you can find a provider who would be able to have everything up and running within 24 hours.
With The Launch Pad solution – If there is a loss of server we would have the ability to spin up a virtual server for someone in a couple hours. If there is a loss of site and you are backing up off site or into the cloud you can almost access everything instantly.
What providers do you recommend that encapsulate all of these elements?
Of course we recommend The Launch Pad BDR product but there are a few others on the market as well. The Launch Pad is not aware of a product at this time that not only has all of the backup methods available but will also manage the technology for you. If you want to find a comprehensive solution, an IT company may be able to provide you with the technology, management and expertise that would encompass the whole solution.
If you have an internal IT team, you may not need to have another IT company manage the backup solution for you. But, make sure you are aware that your team is probably not familiar with the technology and there will be a learning curve involved in understanding everything.
Who should be involved when designing a disaster recovery plan?
The most important part will strategically come from the C-level/Executive Management/Owners. It is essential for those members to identify the critical elements for the company and prioritize them. Certainly, if you are working with an IT partner or you have an internal IT team they should be instrumental in organizing the plan and putting together the logistics. Also, members from the key management team should also be involved because they will have assignments and will need to know what their role will be in the case of an emergency. Last, on some level the entire company will need to be involved because once the plan is created everyone needs to know that the plan exists, what the expectations are in the case of the disaster.
